The project included a review of the previous Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC) Rice Program 5 Year Plan and development of a new plan. The program review included an assessment of relevance, effectiveness and efficiency. Results from an economic evaluation of the rice new variety breeding program were also reported. Development of the new plan included interviews with program managers and review of program records; consultation with rice growers, researchers and extension officers; a two day stakeholder workshop; review of industry literature to scan past R&D investment needs, successes and gaps; program review; and design of a new R&D program using program performance outcomes, consultation findings and external research directions. The resultant plan was presented to the rice industry and the RIRDC Board. Review and new plan development was completed by Michael Clarke.
